26 years in. Every side of the chair.
Sarah Whisnant has spent 26 years in the hair industry, working commission and booth-rental chairs, opening her own salon in 2011, and serving as an educator for a professional hair care company, training and mentoring stylists across the industry.
Sitting on nearly every side of the business showed her the gaps no one was talking about: no maternity coverage, no way to stay active without committing to a full-time chair and clientele, no safety net when a stylist gets sick and loses income, and no central place for the community to find each other when a salon needs to hire.
Sarah founded Salon Substitute to close those gaps, connecting licensed service providers who need flexible work with salons and providers who need coverage. Whether that's for a day, a season, or a fresh start in a new city.
Our Customers
Testimonials
Because of Salon Substitute, I was able to find Sarah to cover my clients while out on maternity leave. We created a contract that was mutually beneficial to both of us. I gave her my formulas and colors to use. She paid me commission on every client of mine that she serviced, caring for them as much as I do.
The Salon Substitute is the best idea ever! As a massage therapist it's a great way to change up my days and get out and meet new people. Everyone has been super helpful and great to work with. The website is quick and easy to use. There's no time commitment and I only work when my schedule allows. I highly recommend this new service to anyone in the salon and spa industry!
Salon Substitute is an amazing innovative idea. As a salon owner and stylist I am always looking for professionals to fill in the gaps. With everything from maternity leave, large spa party's or unforeseen health issues, salon substitute gives me the opportunity to keep my business going.
Salon substitute is a brilliant idea. I love the whole concept and knowing I now have a place to find support if I have a last minute emergency to find qualified providers takes the weight off my shoulders.
Frequently Asked
Questions.
What exactly is Salon Substitute?
Salon Substitute is a hand-matched network connecting salons and spas with vetted beauty and wellness professionals: hair stylists, barbers, nail techs, massage therapists, estheticians, and makeup artists. Whether you need coverage for a single day or you're looking to make a full-time hire, we help you find the right person without the usual hassle.
How does the matching process actually work?
It starts with a short form, it takes about 60 seconds. From there, founder Sarah Whisnant personally reviews every request and hand-matches the right fit herself. No bots, no algorithm, just real industry experience finding real matches. Once she's found a good fit, she introduces both sides and you take it from there.
What does it cost for a salon to use Salon Substitute?
It depends on how much support you want. Posting a single opening is $10. Sarah creates and shares your posting across social media and sends it directly to her network. If you're hiring regularly, the VIP option ($20/month) gives you unlimited job posts, hands-on help from Sarah for every request, and a spot in her monthly newsletter featuring new providers.
Is there a free option?
Yes! If you tag Salon Substitute in your own job posting on social media, Sarah will share it to her Instagram story at no cost. It's a great way to get extra visibility even if you're not ready for a paid tier.
Is it free for stylists and providers to sign up?
Completely free. There's never a cost for providers to join the network, get matched, or be considered for openings. This is a resource built for you as much as it is for salons.
How fast can I expect to be matched?
Since Sarah personally reviews and matches every request, timing depends on who's currently available in the network for your specific need and area. That said, the whole point of Salon Substitute is cutting out the usual back-and-forth. Most people are surprised at how quickly a real match can come together compared to posting a job listing and waiting.
What does "vetted" actually mean here?
Every provider in the network is a licensed professional. Because Sarah has spent 26 years in the industry herself, working commission and booth-rental positions, owning her own salon, and training stylists as an educator, she knows what to look for and personally reviews who joins the network, rather than relying on an automated approval process.
What areas does Salon Substitute cover?
We're currently growing the network market by market, starting locally and expanding from there. If you're outside our current coverage area, sign up anyway. We're actively building out new markets and want to know where demand is.
How is this different from just posting on a job board?
Job boards leave you sorting through unqualified applicants and ghost submissions on your own. Salon Substitute is personal. Sarah reviews every request herself and hand-picks the match, drawing on nearly three decades of real industry experience to know who's actually a fit, not just who applied first.
How do I sign up?
Just fill out the short form. Whether you're a salon looking for coverage or a provider looking for flexible work, it takes about a minute. Sarah takes it from there.
Let's get you matched.
Choose your path. Sarah will be in touch personally.
